As a brand built on tradition and consistency, Jackman has a dutiful quality oftentimes lacking in the greater modern market. Focusing on utility with roots in mid-century sportswear, they provide substantial knits with an enduring charm. The company began in 1949, when a baseball enthusiast named Mitsugu Tanabe left his government post in a humble effort to craft functional stockings. Inspired by the stirrups worn by American Baseball teams traveling overseas, Tanabe sought to adapt them in support of a growing national interest in the sport. He established the Tanabe Meriyasu factory in Fukui, Japan, which soon expanded to producing mitts, uniforms and, eventually, a full line of apparel with a persistent, conscious attention to detail. The consolidated operation mills their own fabric and oversees every aspect of production, enabling it to offer dense, durable clothing that lends itself to everyday wear.
